The commonly known Nutsert is a threaded insert containing a female thread (similar to that of a hex nut) used in thin gauge metals such as sheet-metal or areas with no means of accessing the rear. It is very much like a blind rivet and possesses either a large flange (Rivet Nuts) or a flush flange (Poly Nut) at the outer end; the larger headed nutserts are commonly known as flanged nutserts and have a segment of plain “barrel”. It is this plain barrel segment that crushes into the sheet metal and thereby form a nut like fitting which remains fixed through the parent material.
Applications
Primarily used within sheet metal fabricated products, such as that of air conditioning ducts, electrical distribution boxes and light fittings and even automotive. The uses are varied but are widely uses within sheet metal products.
Advantages
There a numerous advantages of using nutserts; they are easy to use, quick to install, permanent and provide an increased strength to the fastener used in the sheet metal. Nutserts do however require special tools and drilling to fit the threaded insert and one should ensure that care and attention is taken to accurately ensure correct use of the item.
Nutserts are available range of metric (coarse) nutserts from M3 to M10 available in various material types: Stainless, Aluminium and Steel. There are also various styles available, depending upon your specific needs*).
